Does anyone know if there is such a thing as an inflammation disorder?
I literally feel like I’m falling apart. I’ve had CHRONIC shin splints for the past year and a half, that knee inflammation episode (which flared up again, by the way), and recently I’ve been experiencing pain in my other knee as well as one of my elbows. I’m wondering if my entire body is under an attack of inflammation. My pain/discomfort isn't debilitating to my every day activities, but it sure is putting a damper on my fitness goals.
My doctor advised me to take four Aleve per day for inflammation of the knee for 21 days. Would there be a potential long-term risk of taking four a day forever? Does anyone know of any natural remedies for inflammation? Is it an autoimmune problem related to my thyroid? By the way, I don’t care to discuss my thyroid problem anymore. I sometimes find myself blaming every little health ailment on my stupid thyroid and it irritates the heck out of me. It’s just a stupid little thyroid. It’s nothing. It’s a common ailment. I need to stop thinking about it.
Let me just sum this post up by saying that Day 2 of my Personal Best Challenge sucked. My workout this morning SUCKED BALLS. Everything hurt. Diet is OK. Water could be better. Thanks for the diet recommendation, Jim. I do try to eat lots of fibrous veggies, but definitely could be more consistent.
Today’s Meals:
M1: Egg whites, banana, pb (have read recently that you should combine protein and fat or protein and carb, but not a carb and a fat together. Can anyone shed any light on this?)
M2: Apple, tuna
M3: Swordfish, salad (yummy lunch w/a friend)
M4: Chicken breast, lima beans, romaine lettuce (guess I forgot to buy fibrous veggies this week!)
M5: Cottage Cheese
Photos of the house will be coming soon. I have no idea where the camera is!

Hey Rach,
Thanks for your comments!
Can't help with your inflammation stuff but it sure doesn't sound like any fun.
And at least your workout only sucked balls and not DONKEY BALLS like Jeremy says sometimes! So there is always a Positive side!
Find the camera. We need pics of the new place.
sweetie I don't want to worry you but Please...Go see your Dr ..or another one if he's saying take some aleve & go home... Wide spread inflamation could be any number of autoimmune dissorder things going on I could be way off base but better to check it now..
Yea I'm one to talk _ I've been blithering about my foot..& now my knees &hip for sometime now.. but I WILL go see someone this week about the foot ( where I think My problems stems..promise
*Big hugs*
I'm sorry that you are going through this... I'm sure you've googled inflammation of joints and seen the different types of autoimmune disorders have this symptom. I would really think about seeing the doctor again or another one if it continues. It could be anything from stressing your body with too much exercise to rheumatoid arthritis to lupus... or because you are female "in your head" (I love that finding)... :) I actually had a doctor tell me one time that my pain was in my head, that I needed to stop "visualizes" ailments.
Hang in there girl! No one knows your body like you and if you think you need another opinion - go for it!

Well Donkeyballs on the inflammation!! Sorry Tom :) Yeah four aleve might work in the interim but I'm not sure that's the best way to treat it. I used aleve in college when I had inflammation in my shoulders and elbows from competitive swimming. There are exercises you should be able to do in addition to your workouts to ease the inflammation. I would ask your doctor about those so you don't get side tracked.
Hello Rachel- I'm been following your blog for a few months, but this is my first time posting. Just hope I can say something helpful.
I would find doctors who are researching in the area of thyroid and autoimmune problems. My health issues have taken me through 6 different doctors and now that I found one researching in my area, it makes all the difference. I was so tired of just having medications thrown at me. He recommended a research study. One side benefit is that I fill out a report every night and certain things flag my doctor. I actually got a call from his assistant yesterday because of the abdominal problems (just the flu, I think). She called to say he said to drink lots of fluids, no soda, and to come in for a urine test to make sure there's not another bladder infection.
Also, Aleve is an OTC brand of Naproxen, which is the same as prescription Vioxx. A higher dosage may be more effective, but doctor's are more careful with the prescriptions now because of the dangers. You should have a warning label on your bottle that the FDA started requiring a few years ago. Ask your doctor if Ibuprofen would have less risk and similar results.
Well, I can't really contribute to the inflammation stuff. My problems are all in my head (ha ha), but there's some sound advice here.
Keep us posted though.
So sorry to hear about the inflammation problem. I agree, please see a doctor. Two things I can think of that causes wide spread inflammation are infection and autoimmune disorder.
As for the Aleve (naproxen), taking too much of it, just like taking too much aspirin or ibuprofen, can cause gastrointestinal bleed or ulcers. And just to put your mind at ease a little bit, Vioxx is a cox-2 inhibitor, which is completely different from Aleve. So you don't have to worry about possibly having a heart attack from Aleve.
Good luck! Hope things get resolved soon!
I have a GREAT natural pain reliever... I hurt my knees last year and NOTHING would help it - until I got this stuff from my "integrative" guy (he does Eastern and Western med). I am going to see if I can find it on their website for you. I am not kidding - I took two and was pain free for the first time in two weeks!
here it is: http://www.metagenics.com/products/catalog/detail.asp?pid=162 it says it is for pain, but it is also for inflamation - he recommends it for people with arthritis in general... if you decide to try it, I hope you have luck with it. You might be able to find it in a natural food store that has a supplements section.
Rachel,
Thanks for cheering for me on my blog, I really appreciate it - I'm blushing that I'm anyone's inspiration though, thank you. I hope I get a t-shirt or something, it says I should at least get a certificate for 3rd place.
I take stuff called Fluid Joint, it helps my knees and my MIL and her mom both take it for arthitis and stuff and they like it too. I can only usually find it at Walgreens.
Don't let a sucky workout get you down - I go through periods where none of my workouts seem to feel very spectalar, but in the end I figure all that matters is that I went and did it - they'll all add up in the end.

I take glucosomine/chondroitin as well ... and have everyday for probably 7-8 years.
I'm convinced it is what enables me to keep going, especially after all the abuse I have put my joints through over the years.
Rest should also help ... although I know you don't want to hear that. :)
I haven't a clue!
I agree with the others... sounds like you need to get a second opinion. I sure hope you can get these things figured out... health problems are the worst :(
I don't know how I missed this post! I've been having similar issues, and I do see a chiropractor on a regular basis who is into holistics, and if things get into the unknown, I go see a GP, but they almost always prescribe some drug, which I'm not too crazy about, but at least I get different oppinions. My Chiro has advised me to use certain supplements, and I think I saw a post where someone mentioned supps. (I take glucosamine-chondroitin, calcium citrate, fish oil capsules, MSM, and rhus tox.) Of course, your situation may be different than mine -- part of my issue is arthritis. Do see a different doctor, be pushy and ask a lot of questions.
Take care and keep us posted!
Irene
